How lucky you were. What a great Mom you had. My Mom was giving birth to my little brother on April 29, 1968. After that I was too busy babysitting, washing bottles, & changing diapers to go to a cool show like that. My experience with HAIR (besides not cutting mine) was the film version with Hottie (at the time) Treat Williams. I never knew how much he resembled Gerome Ragni. I do love the film version and know every word to the lyrics used in it...but have learned to also embrace the Broadway soundtrack. Great drawing!!

My mom was a member of Columbia House Record Club for a few years in the late 60's/early 70's. She would often forget to send back monthly mailing with her preferences and would automatically be sent that month's selection.

We had quite a collection before she cancelled her membership. We had "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" (pretentious crap!), "Cabaret", several Fifth Dimension disks and "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" by Herb Alpert (I spent hours staring at that album cover with prepubescent hopes that one day the strategically-placed whipped cream would slide off the naked model's body).

But the disk that got heavy rotation was "Hair". The music was like nothing else I'd heard before. And the lyrics were definitely like nothing I'd heard before. I had to run to my unabridged encyclopedic dictionary on several occasions to look up a few of the words. Sure beat the hell out of my Partridge Family records!

I love the portrait and the story, your mother was a very cool lady. I listened to hair over and over as a kid too, singing along to words I didn't know the meaning to. My husband went to see it as a kid with his older sister and danced up on stage. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
