Great illustration and story, as usual, sir. I hope "Ellen Weinraub" googles herself someday and finds out how she plays a part in one of your musical memories.

And to Jasper, I shudder at the thought of Jello Biafra fronting a new Nirvana. Good call there.

"Queen cover band"

My sentiments as well. Why is it that all of my favorite bands from when I was a kid refuse to admit that time has moved on and they should as well?

If you lose a member (or two, or three or more) who were integral to what made your band unique, why continue to milk the cash cow and risk destroying your band's reputation and hard work with a tepid or half-assed imitation. If you're truly talented, move on and form a new band or do something else. It was bad enough when the old R&B and 50's rockers reconstituted themselves. For instance, the Platters actually has multiple versions of itself touring at the same time! It's like a burger franchise.

The surviving guys from Nirvana got it right after Kurt snuffed himself: Dave Grohl started Foo Fighters (which, arguably is bigger than Nirvana, if not quite as influential), and Novoselic is playing golf or building Civil War dioramas or something. You don't see them at the State Fair as Nirvana Part II with Jello Biafra doing all the Kurt bits.

I refuse to spend a dime on supporting the likes of The Who, The New Cars, Queen (with Paul Rodgers), Boston, Journey, Styx, Foreigner, etc., etc. As far as I'm concerned, they *are* all just a bunch of cover bands.

wow, i just heard "Killer Queen" on the radio yesterday. how serendipitous. You left out how queen was responsible for two of the greatest film soundtracks of all time "Flash Gordon" and "Highlander"! You're right that their earlier work runs circles around their later stuff, but i have a soft spot for those two albums because i'm a nerd.

Freddy Mercury WAS queen.
