It's a thinly-veiled adaptation of the Arthur Godfrey story. Though the movie takes certain elements to extremes for dramatic effect, it's the same basic premise: A folksy performer who becomes an egomaniac, then gets his comeuppance when he takes things too far. If you only know him from his days in Mayberry, you'll be amazed at how he turns the lovable hayseed character on its head, creating something vicious and sinister. Very powerful stuff.
